The story of Touring Superleggera
The early years In early 1926, two lawyers from Milan – Felice Bianchi Anderloni and Gaetano Ponzoni – decided to leave behind the world…
The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder, produced in seven units, was presented at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Like the coupé version, it is also based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, of which it is fitted with the 450 horsepower engine, derived from Maserati.
The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder, a masterpiece of automotive design seamlessly melded onto the potent running gear of a modern Alfa Romeo 8C, captivated enthusiasts with its breathtaking aesthetics and performance prowess. Initially unveiled as a 1:1 model at the prestigious 2016 Geneva Salon, this striking creation garnered acclaim and later claimed the Concept Cars & Prototypes award at the renowned Concorso d’Eleganza, Villa d’Este in 2016. Inspired by the iconic 1952 C52 ‘Disco Volante,’ which translates to ‘Flying Saucer’ in Italian, the original concept coupe by Touring Superleggera was a testament to Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni’s visionary design. Powered by a tuned 1,997cc four-cylinder engine, the 1950s Disco Volante boasted remarkable aerodynamics and performance, influencing automotive legends like Sir William Lyons and his designer Malcolm Sayer in the creation of the D-type and E-type Jaguars. The modern iteration, spearheaded by Louis de Fabribeckers, retained the essence of the original Touring masterpiece while leveraging the technological advancements of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. With a Ferrari-designed 4.7-liter V8 engine churning out 450 horsepower, the 8C provided blistering performance, capable of exceeding 190mph. Craftsmen at Touring Superleggera’s Milan facility meticulously transformed standard 8C road cars into bespoke works of art. Using traditional methods, they hand-formed aluminum panels and integrated carbon fiber sections to create a lightweight yet robust body. The interior, crafted with Italian hides, exuded luxury and bespoke elegance reminiscent of bygone eras. The collaboration between Touring Superleggera and Alfa Romeo resulted in the creation of just eight exclusive Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyders. One such discerning client, a British Ferrari collector with a penchant for automotive excellence, influenced the development of an open version of the modern masterpiece. Embarking on an 18-month design and development journey, Touring meticulously crafted the Spyder variant, paying particular attention to the windscreen’s height and profile. The design featured a dramatic wraparound effect, reminiscent of a helmet visor, while the removable roof ensured comfortable conversation even at high speeds. Further enhancing the driving experience, the suspension was re-engineered for a more comfortable yet sporting ride, while a specially tuned exhaust system produced an exquisite engine note cherished by the owner. Adorned with classic Alfa Romeo insignia and unique aerodynamic elements inspired by the Supermarine Spitfire, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder epitomized automotive artistry and craftsmanship, offering a rare and unparalleled driving experience reserved for the fortunate few.
