Abarth Monotipo

The Abarth Monotipo by Stola.

Vehicle Overview

The Abarth Monotipo, unveiled at the 1998 Turin Motor Show, was a striking concept car that bore little resemblance to its base, the Fiat Barchetta. Designed by the ex-Pininfarina designer Aldo Brovarone, the Monotipo was created to showcase Stola’s craftsmanship rather than serve as a mere fashion statement. Powering the Abarth Monotipo was Lancia’s robust 2.0 16v turbocharged engine, capable of delivering 260 bhp. This potent engine was paired with a limited slip differential and enormous Ferrari-sourced Brembo ventilated disc brakes, ensuring exceptional performance and handling. The body, constructed almost entirely from composite materials, retained the Fiat Barchetta’s underpinnings but featured a radically different and race-inspired design. The Monotipo incorporated numerous race car elements, such as built-in air jacks, integrated towing eyes, Momo seats, steering wheel, and gear knob. It rolled on 18-inch O.Z. wheels fitted with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, further emphasizing its performance pedigree. The doors of the Monotipo swung upwards at the touch of a hidden switch, adding to its futuristic appeal, while a long, sweeping Plexiglass roof panel, developed using aerospace technology, covered the top. Fiat’s close relationship with Stola allowed the use of the “Abarth” tag, with traditional Abarth scorpion badges adorning the front and rear of the car. The Abarth Monotipo, much like the 1996 Dedica, was a collaborative effort between Aldo Brovarone and Stola’s managing director Alfredo Stola, highlighting the synergy between designer and manufacturer. The Abarth Monotipo stands as a testament to Stola’s capabilities in automotive design and engineering, blending advanced materials, high-performance components, and innovative design features into a cohesive and visually striking package. Its debut at the Turin Motor Show not only showcased Stola’s exceptional craftsmanship but also underscored the enduring appeal and potential of the Abarth brand.
