Ferrari 412

The Ferrari 412: a V12 powered four seater designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 412 took over the mantle from the Ferrari 400 and introduced a range of new details: a higher line for the luggage compartment, combined with a more pronounced front spoiler, enhanced its aerodynamics. Pininfarina also altered the longitudinal members and opted to match the bumpers with the body color. Alloy wheels, window frames now in black, and turn signals were redesigned. The engine underwent a 1 mm bore increase, boosting displacement to 4,942 cc (302 cu in), hence the name change to 412, reflecting the single cylinder displacement in cubic centimeters. Both manual and automatic transmissions remained, but exterior badging no longer indicated the transmission type. Bosch ABS became available, a novelty for Ferrari. The body saw modifications, with a raised rear deck offering more luggage room. Pininfarina modernized the exterior with numerous subtle adjustments. By the mid-1980s, the boxy and somewhat nondescript 400i felt outdated. Bumpers were body-colored; a deeper spoiler adorned the front, while a black valance at the rear incorporated fog lamps and exhaust pipes. Side window trim transitioned from chrome to black. New flat-faced wheels were fitted with TRX tires. Ferrari intervened, primarily redesigning bumpers and interiors, and implementing technical alterations, including increasing the V12’s displacement from 4,824 to 4,943 cm³, and standardizing ABS. With the capacity increase, power output returned to 340 hp. Production of the Ferrari 412 continued until 1989, with 303 units built. Production ceased in 1989 without an immediate successor; the mid-engined Mondial remained Ferrari’s sole offering with 2+2 seating. In 1992, following a three-year hiatus, the classic front-engine V12 2+2 grand tourer returned with the 456 designed by Pietro Camardella. In 2019, luxury coachbuilder ARES Design Modena unveiled renders of a Ferrari 412-inspired concept car named “Pony,” intended for limited production based on the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso.
