Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 512S Speciale project traces its origins back to the distant year of 1969. Beneath the sleek chassis captured in the photo lies the DNA of the Ferrari 312P, a formidable racing car meticulously crafted by Maranello for the World Sportscar Championship. Specifically, it’s the renowned 312P chassis 0868, which made its mark by clinching second place with the driving duo of Mario Andretti and Chris Amon at the 1969 12 Hours of Sebring, followed by a commendable fourth position at Brands Hatch, piloted by Chris Amon and Pedro Rodriguez. However, fate intervened cruelly during the Monza 1000 Kilometers race when an unfortunate accident left chassis 0868 in ruins. In the wake of this setback, Maranello made the strategic decision to cease any further attempts at repairing the damaged vehicle and instead repurpose its chassis for the inception of the 512 project. After fulfilling its role as a testbed, chassis 0868 found itself with a new owner in 1970 when it was acquired by Pininfarina. The design of the Ferrari 512S Speciale, characterized by its bold and muscular lines, a cockpit accommodating three occupants, and a windshield that gracefully rises in a manner reminiscent of a hunting falcon, bears the distinctive signature of Filippo Sapino. This groundbreaking concept simultaneously shocked and puzzled onlookers. Its revolutionary ‘wedge’ treatment marked a departure from traditional Ferrari aesthetics, causing both astonishment and bewilderment. Furthermore, the nomenclature ‘512S’ sparked confusion, as there was no 5.0-litre V12 engine concealed beneath the louvres of the rear clamshell. Unveiled at the 1970 Turin Motor Show, the Ferrari 512S Speciale garnered widespread acclaim, exerting a profound influence on Ferrari’s design ethos in the ensuing years. Indeed, subsequent models such as the 365 GT/BB from ’71 and the iconic 308 GTB from ’75 owe a significant debt to the stylistic innovations pioneered by the 512 S Berlinetta Speciale.
