Vehicle Overview
The Fiat Stanga Barchetta: Of all the Italian competition cars that have graced the race track, Fiat stands as a formidable name. Established in 1899, Fiat’s legacy in racing predates many other automakers. In 1949, brothers Gianfranco, Sandro, and Camillo Stanga embarked on a mission to assemble top-tier competition cars using Italy’s finest components. By the early 1950s, they had carved a niche with some of Europe’s fastest cars, culminating in the creation of just seven Stanga Barchettas, designed specifically for competition. The story begins with Stanga acquiring a Fiat 500 chassis, meticulously upgrading it with lightweight tubular steel, and refining the suspension and steering to meet rigorous competition standards. The heart of the car came from Giannini, renowned for their race-tuned engines. Their 600cc Fiat engine, equipped with twin Weber carburetors, a high-compression head, and a close-ratio gearbox, was a marvel of engineering prowess. Completing this formidable package was the coachwork by Motto of Turin. Motto, celebrated for their lightweight competition car bodies, lent their expertise to create a sleek and aerodynamic design that epitomized Italian craftsmanship. Known for their work with prestigious marques like Ferrari, Lancia, and even Cadillac, Motto’s designs were marked by clean, elegant lines devoid of unnecessary adornments. The result was the 1951 Stanga Barchetta, a rare breed among racecars, with only seven ever built and just two featuring Motto’s coachwork. These cars made their mark on the Italian racing circuit, including iconic events like the Mille Miglia in the early 1950s. This particular Stanga Barchetta, having competed in those heady days, carries a rich racing pedigree endorsed by experts like John DeBore.
