Lancia Flaminia Loraymo

The Lancia Flaminia Loraymo by Raymond Loewy.

Vehicle Overview

The Lancia Flaminia Loraymo is a captivating and lesser-known creation that emerged from the collaboration between Raymond Loewy, the renowned designer, and Rocco Motto, the eclectic Turin coachbuilder. After selling his Jaguar XK140 Boano to Archie Moore, then the light heavyweight champ, Raymond Loewy entrusted Motto with bringing another of his innovative design to life, resulting in an exceptionally original body for a Flaminia Coupé. Rocco Motto, known for his expertise in aluminum processing, embraced the challenge and successfully completed the project in time for the 47th Paris Motor Show, held from October 6 to 16, 1960. The debut of the Loraymo at the show marked the unveiling of a car like no other, painted in a striking metallic dark amber hue. The name “Loraymo” was chosen by Loewy himself, drawing from his design studio’s telegram address, which cleverly combines letters from his name and surname: LOewy RAYMOnd. This unique designation adds a personal touch to the car, reflecting Loewy’s involvement and pride in the project. The Lancia Flaminia Loraymo boasts several distinctive features, including an adjustable wing positioned atop the rear window. This innovative design element, aimed at reducing low-pressure aerodynamic turbulence, foreshadowed similar features later adopted by iconic Lancias such as the Stratos and the Delta Integrale Evoluzione. Under the hood, the Loraymo is powered by the Flaminia type 823.00 engine, which was expertly tuned by the Turin specialist Nardi, enhancing the car’s performance and driving experience. Following Loewy’s personal use of the Loraymo in Europe and America, the car eventually found its way into the hands of the president of the Lancia Club of America. Recognizing the historical significance of the vehicle, it was generously donated to the Lancia museum after Loewy’s passing on July 14, 1986. Subsequently, the Loraymo underwent a comprehensive restoration, ensuring its preservation for future generations to admire and appreciate.
