The OSCA MT4 Morelli 2AD 1350.
Vehicle Overview
The OSCA MT4 Morelli holds a significant place in the lineage of Officine Specializzate Costruzioni Automobili (OSCA), the marque founded by the Maserati brothers after their departure from Maserati in 1937. The MT4 series, starting with the original lightweight chassis in 1947, was pivotal in showcasing OSCA.’s prowess in engineering race cars. Initially powered by a Fiat 1100 cc block, the MT4 series evolved with enhancements like independent front suspension and increased engine displacement. The MT4-2AD model, introduced in 1950, featured a new twin-cam head on a proprietary block, offering improved performance. Engine sizes ranged from 1,100 cc initially, expanding to 1,340 cc to cater to various racing requirements. Historical sources indicate that a total of 72 MT4 models were produced, each uniquely configured with engines of different displacements. This diversity highlighted OSCA.’s flexibility in adapting to racing regulations and evolving performance demands during its production span. Chassis number 1156, delivered in May 1955 to Mr. Giuseppe Rossi as a rolling chassis with the MT4-2AD 1,100 cc engine, is notable for its custom aluminum coachwork. Instead of commissioning a coachbuilder, Rossi crafted his own body for the MT4, showcasing both his ingenuity and the racing capabilities of the car. Throughout Italy and France, the MT4 achieved significant success under Rossi’s ownership and later under Enzo Buzzetti, who shared driving duties. During the 1959 Targa Florio, a renowned endurance race, an accident damaged the original handmade body of the MT4. To restore the car, Morelli, a respected coachbuilder known for his work with OSCA, provided replacement coachwork. Morelli had already contributed similar bodies for other OSCA models throughout the decade, reflecting his expertise and the collaboration between OSCA and renowned Italian artisans. The OSCA MT4 Morelli thus exemplifies the blend of engineering innovation, bespoke craftsmanship, and racing success that defined OSCA’s legacy in motorsport during the mid-20th century. Its unique history and pedigree make it a cherished piece of automotive history, celebrated among enthusiasts and collectors alike for its significance in the evolution of Italian sports car engineering.
