The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Goccia has a rather eventful life that begins in 1957, when it leaves the Portello factories in the guise of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce (Type 750E, chassis number #04718). The first specimen of this model had a very spartan set-up, almost like a racing car. The sliding Plexiglas windows, as well as the absence of the rear bench, are details aimed at containing the weight of the car. After all, sporty oriented customers do not worry about poor comfort and look more to performance, perhaps thinking of using their Giulietta also in the race. A few years later the Giulietta #04718 was rebuilt, following a rather widespread trend among the drivers of the time. The transformation is the work of the Milanese specialist Zagato, capable of creating a more aerodynamic amd light body than the standard one. In the same period the car abandoned the SVZ configuration to take on an even more unusual look. In 1961 the Giulietta #04718 received a new aluminum body designed by Giovanni Michelotti. Leaving the pace unchanged, Michelotti defines a low and slender silhouette, characterized by the rounded lines typical of those years. Thanks to the three-lobe grille, the front maintains a strong Alfa Romeo family feeling, while the faired headlights are very aerodynamic. The very low headliner and the fastback tail are reminiscent of another famous creation by the same designer, the Alpine-Renault A1100. Compared to the French berlinetta, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Goccia has a more rounded tail, not yet influenced by the dictates of Professor Kamm. From this point of view, it appears less modern than the Alpine, which instead has a truncated tail. The rod door handles, a legacy of sports cars from the 1950s, are simply marvelous. The heart of this very special Alfa Romeo Giulietta is the popular 1,290 cc twin camshaft. which debuted on the 1956 Sprint Veloce. Powered by two Weber double-barrel carburettors, it shows a natural propensity to rev up thanks to its almost “square” configuration (bore 74 mm, stroke 75 mm). The skilful modifications of the Conrero workshop result in a maximum power of about 130 hp, which is very remarkable in relation to the displacement. In fact, even today it is not so common to find an aspirated engine with a specific power close to 100 hp / liter. Thanks to this exceptional engine, the refined aerodynamics and the weight of only 750 kg, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Goccia exceeds 220 km / h.
