Italdesign Capsula
The Italdesign Capsula designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Vehicle Overview
The Italdesign Capsula represents a bold departure from conventional automotive design, envisioned not merely as a concept but as a practical hypothesis for future vehicles. Unlike typical research projects, the Capsula embodies a tangible construction approach that merges innovative thinking with inspiration drawn from early automotive designs, prior to the widespread adoption of bodywork. The core idea behind the Capsula revolves around a modular platform concept. This platform integrates essential components such as the engine, driveshaft, fuel tank, spare wheel, trunk, servobrake, heater, and optical groups into a single, self-sufficient unit. This design approach was inspired by the structural simplicity and utility of buses and small industrial vehicles, aiming to create a chassis that is both fully equipped and adaptable. A defining feature of the Capsula is its modular design, where the compartment, or “capsule,” is applied to the chassis in a quick and straightforward manner. This modularity allows the vehicle to be easily transformed to serve various purposes. For instance, the Capsula could be converted into a commercial vehicle, ambulance, or rescue vehicle by swapping out the capsule, showcasing its versatility and potential for diverse applications. In its berline (sedan) version, the Capsula emphasizes maximizing interior space. Despite its compact exterior length of just 3,720 mm, the vehicle offers an interior compartment that surpasses the dimensions of contemporary models like the VW Golf 1 and Mercedes 380SE. This efficient use of space highlights Italdesign’s commitment to combining innovative design with practical functionality, aiming to provide ample room within a compact footprint. The Italdesign Capsula is a visionary exploration of automotive design, proposing a future where modularity and efficiency redefine vehicle utility. Its innovative approach to platform design and adaptability positions it as a pioneering example of how automotive concepts can evolve to meet a wide range of needs, from everyday commuting to specialized functions.
