Vehicle Overview
The Ford Maya II ES, while not a conventional showcar, represented a significant research concept conceived by Italdesign. This project aimed to develop a two-seat coupé with a central engine, intended for a daily production target of 50 cars specifically tailored for the USA market. The genesis of the Maya II ES can be traced back to Ford’s collaboration with Italdesign Giugiaro in 1985, spurred by the premieres of prototypes like the Lotus Etna and the initial Maya at the Turin Motor Show. Ford’s request led to the evolution of the Maya II ES with a modified design, complemented by the development of a spare car equipped with a longitudinal engine, known as the Maya II EM. While the general architecture of the Maya remained consistent, the Maya II ES featured smoother lines, aligning with Ford’s specifications. Notably, Ford’s directives emphasized particular design solutions, including the implementation of a central air intake reminiscent of those used in Ferrari models. A curious anecdote surrounds the painting of the Maya II ES. Initially, Ford expressed a preference for a flaming red hue. However, upon the car’s return to Italdesign, an unexpected twist occurred. The vehicle was promptly repainted in two different tones of metal grey, deviating from Ford’s initial color preference. The decision to shift from a vibrant red to a more understated grey added an intriguing layer to the Maya II ES story, highlighting the dynamic interplay between automaker preferences and the creative choices made by design teams. While the Ford Maya II ES did not progress to a full-scale production of 50 cars, its existence remains a testament to the collaborative efforts between Ford and Italdesign, capturing a moment in automotive history where experimentation and innovation were at the forefront of design evolution.
