Vehicle Overview
The third variation on the theme “Maya,” the II EM, marked a significant development in Ford’s collaboration with Italdesign. In response to the success of the Maya at the Turin Motor Show in 1984, Ford entrusted Italdesign with the task of creating a working prototype featuring a longitudinal rear central engine. The result was the Maya II EM, a groundbreaking design that showcased the fusion of Italian styling and American engineering. Following the positive reception at the Turin Motor Show, Ford sought more than just a showpiece. They commissioned Italdesign to create the Maya II ES, a styling model, and a spare car equipped with a central engine for real-world testing. Painted in a striking Ferrari red, the Maya II EM emerged as a working prototype, completed in July 1985. It was then swiftly transported to the United States, finding its place at Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn. Diverging from the original Maya design, the Maya II EM featured notable modifications. The expansive engine hood, wedged at the end of the roof, disappeared, making way for a more functional door. The distinctive second light was replaced by three vertical slits, contributing to a refreshed aesthetic. Underneath the sleek exterior, the Maya II EM housed a powerful Ford 6 V 3-liter engine, boasting an impressive 300 horsepower and utilizing bi-turbocharging technology. This evolution in design and engineering not only showcased the innovative collaboration between Ford and Italdesign but also highlighted the adaptability of the Maya concept. The Ford Maya II EM stood as a testament to the continuous pursuit of excellence and the willingness to push boundaries in the realm of automotive design.
