The Lexus Landau concept car, a luxurious and compact five-door hatchback saloon, stands as a testament to the fusion of deluxe features and high performance. Derived from the floorpan of the Lexus GS 300, a creation of Toyota in 1991, the Landau maintains the mechanical configuration of its predecessor while carving a niche for itself with a 60 cm reduction in length. Despite its more compact exterior, the Landau excels in interior roominess, following a philosophy that sought to combine spacious interiors with streamlined dimensions. To achieve this, the designers raised the roof by approximately 5 cm, ingeniously repositioning the fuel tank beneath the rear seats. This strategic move not only enhanced passenger comfort but also contributed to the optimization of interior volumes, reflecting a commitment to rationalized design. The name “Landau,” bestowed upon this deluxe hatchback, pays homage to a luxury carriage from the 19th century. The Landau carriage, drawn by two horses, originated in the German city of Landau and symbolizes the elegance and sophistication that the Lexus Landau aims to embody. Designed by the renowned Italdesign Giugiaro, the Lexus Landau is a masterpiece that marries aesthetics with functionality. The designers’ meticulous attention to detail is evident in the seamless integration of the compact dimensions and the enhancement of interior space. However, even the best designs encounter unforeseen challenges. A notable incident occurred during the presentation test drive at Fiat’s Lingotto Test Track when Fabrizio Giugiaro, experienced an unexpected crash. This unintended episode, while a momentary setback, adds a touch of curiosity to the Landau’s history, showcasing the unpredictability that sometimes accompanies automotive innovation.
