Fiat Tempra
The Fiat Tempra designed by Ercole Spada.
Vehicle Overview
The Fiat Tempra, a product of Fiat’s innovation, was introduced to the automotive market in 1990, designed by Ercole Spada at the I.DE.A Institute. It was intended to succeed the Fiat Regata, which had been designed by Sergio Sartorelli. Originally named the Tipo 3 project, the Tempra filled the gap between the smaller Fiat Tipo (project Tipo 2) and the larger Fiat Croma (project Tipo 4), offering a mid-size option. Sharing its Type Three platform with esteemed counterparts like the Lancia Dedra and Alfa Romeo 155, the Tempra was engineered for both performance and comfort. Its versatile design quickly earned recognition, including the prestigious title of the 1991 Semperit Irish Car of the Year in Ireland, underscoring its broad appeal and quality. Production of the Tempra extended beyond its Italian origins. It was manufactured in Brazil from 1991 to 1998, and assembly lines in Turkey by Tofas and in Vietnam by Mekong Auto continued to produce the model in complete knockdown kits until 2000. Despite ceasing production in Italy in 1997, the Fiat Tempra remains a notable example of Fiat’s ability to create dependable family cars with global appeal. Its enduring popularity and widespread presence underline its status as a cherished classic in automotive history.
