The De Tomaso Zonda one-off by Ghia.
The De Tomaso Zonda, designed by Tom Tjaarda for Carrozzeria Ghia in 1971, stands as a testament to automotive creativity and unfulfilled potential. Although Giulia Moselli, formerly of Italdesign, sketched the initial concept at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, Tjaarda refined and brought the vision to life. Based on a shortened Deauville chassis, the Zonda boasted a formidable 5.7 V8 Ford engine, promising a thrilling driving experience. Originally targeted for the American market, the Zonda faced an unfortunate setback when Ford, the intended importer, declined to bring it to the United States. The stumbling block was the projected retail price of $14,000, which Ford deemed insufficient for ensuring profitable sales. Despite its compelling design and performance capabilities, the Zonda became a casualty of the challenging economic considerations of the time. De Tomaso, operating alone, found itself unable to bear the financial burden of developing the Zonda for series production. The ambitious project was subsequently abandoned, marking the end of the road for a car that could have been an icon. The De Tomaso Zonda’s fate highlights the delicate balance between innovation and economic viability in the automotive industry. Today, the De Tomaso Zonda remains a rare and intriguing footnote in automotive history, a reminder of the myriad factors that can influence a car’s journey from conception to production. While the Zonda never graced the streets as a mass-produced model, its legacy lives on in the minds of enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate the ephemeral beauty of automotive dreams unrealized.
