Ghia G230 S Coupé

The Ghia G230 S Coupé: green latern.

Vehicle Overview

The Ghia G230 S Coupé represents a bold and visionary reinterpretation of the Fiat 2300 S platform, blending classic Italian elegance with modern engineering expertise. Conceived by the renowned Ghia design house under the leadership of chief designer Sergio Sartorelli, the G230 S epitomized Ghia’s ambition to push the boundaries of automotive design and engineering. The project began with a total overhaul of the Fiat 2300 S, incorporating cutting-edge technology while honoring the platform’s heritage. At the heart of the G230 S was a meticulously crafted tubular chassis developed by the famed Gilco, the engineering firm behind Ferrari’s legendary frames. Led by engineer Gilberto Colombo, Gilco took inspiration from the iconic Maserati Birdcage to develop a structure that combined lightweight agility with exceptional strength. This innovative chassis design was key to the G230 S’s superior handling and performance, establishing it as a serious contender in the sports car market. The G230 S was powered by a Fiat engine, but it benefited from extensive tuning by Abarth, Fiat’s famed performance partner. Along with a power boost, the G230 S featured upgrades to its disc brakes, gearbox, and suspension system, ensuring that it could deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Practical design details included a rear hatch that seamlessly incorporated the rear window, offering convenient access to a spacious luggage compartment, and a uniquely designed two-piece padded seat that allowed for constant ventilation. Interestingly, the spare tire was positioned in front of the engine, enhancing accessibility in emergencies and freeing up additional trunk space. Ghia’s ambition for the G230 S extended beyond a mere design exercise. The company actively sought to engage Fiat and Abarth in discussions about mass production, seeing the car as a potential new model in Fiat’s lineup. The G230 S made its public debut at the 1963 Turin Motor Show, where it captured widespread attention for its elegant design and technical innovations. Ghia produced at least two coupé prototypes, one in silver and another in green, as well as a Spider version that appeared at various international motor shows. Unfortunately, despite the high anticipation, the G230 S never went into full-scale production. Today, only the green prototype survives, carefully preserved in its original condition, serving as a testament to Ghia’s enduring legacy of innovation and craftsmanship. Though its journey was brief, the Ghia G230 S Coupé remains an important symbol of Italian automotive excellence.
