Vehicle Overview
The Maserati Ghibli introduced in 1992 is an evolution of the previous Maserati Biturbo, which it replaced. Produced until 1997, only 2,380 units of the Ghibli were made, reviving the historic name first presented in 1967. The Ghibli’s launch marked the end of several Biturbo-derived models, including the 222, 2.24V, 422, 4.24V, 430, and Spider. Additionally, a restyling of the Maserati Racing model by Marcello Gandini contributed to the rebirth of the Ghibli name. The Ghibli featured significant updates, including a new front design, a higher tail, new aerodynamic appendages, specific rims, and an updated engine range. The car was available with two V6 twin-turbo 24-valve engines. The more powerful engine had a displacement of 1996 cm³ and produced 306 hp, enabling the Maserati Ghibli Gandini to reach a top speed of 260 km/h. The other engine, derived from the 228i coupé, had a displacement of 2790 cm³ and produced 284 hp, allowing for a top speed of 250 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. These performance specifications underscored the Ghibli’s blend of speed and luxury, aligning with Maserati’s tradition of producing high-performance vehicles with elegant designs. The Ghibli’s redesign by Gandini and its powerful engine options helped re-establish Maserati’s reputation for producing desirable and dynamic sports cars. The revival of the Ghibli name was a nod to Maserati’s storied past while also pushing the brand forward into the 1990s with a model that combined advanced engineering with a touch of historical legacy.
