Maserati Mexico Prototipo
Chassis
The Maserati Mexico Prototipo designed by Pietro Frua.
Vehicle Overview
The Maserati Mexico Prototipo, a unique prototype, stands out as a significant chapter in the history of Maserati’s elegant grand tourers. While Vignale earned the distinction of bodying the production Mexicos, it was Pietro Frua who created the first prototype on chassis number AM112 001. This special car was also equipped with Maserati’s first 4.7-liter engine, marking it as a notable milestone in the marque’s evolution. Frua’s design for the Mexico Prototipo incorporated several classic elements that defined his work, making the car both distinctive and visually captivating. The car features a sloping doorline with a pronounced “kick” in the rear fender, a design element reminiscent of Frua’s work on the Maserati 5000 GT. Additionally, the prototype boasted tall side windows and headlamps set into chrome-accented recesses in the front fenders, contributing to a sleek and streamlined appearance that arguably surpassed the production version’s aesthetics. The prototype was finished in Amaranto, a deep burgundy color, and adorned with a Neutro Connolly leather interior. Complementing its elegant design were the Borrani chrome wire wheels, adding a touch of classic sophistication. On May 5, 1967, the unique Frua prototipo was delivered to its first owner, Mr. Nello Della Casa of Modena. At some point during its history, the car received a later 4.2-liter Mexico engine, which intriguingly bore the same chassis number stamp, AM112 001, as the original 4.7-liter unit. This indicates meticulous attention to maintaining the car’s original identity. The Maserati Mexico Prototipo’s journey continued when it was exported to the United States through Tom Meade, a well-known car designer and broker. It was subsequently sold to Kenny Wagner of Texas, where it remained until 1978. The car later changed hands, becoming part of the collections of Larry Maese and Frank Mandarano, a renowned Ferrari enthusiast and founder of Concorso Italiano. Throughout its life, the Maserati Mexico Prototipo has been a testament to Frua’s design prowess and Maserati’s commitment to innovation and elegance, making it a prized piece of automotive history.
