The Volvo P1800 ES Rocket by Frua.
Vehicle Overview
The Volvo P1800 ES Rocket by Pietro Frua represents a fascinating chapter in the evolution of the classic Volvo P1800 sport coupe. By the late 1960s, the P1800 was starting to show its age, and Volvo’s management sought ways to modernize the model within budget constraints. One innovative idea was to transform the classic coupe into a “shooting brake,” a design trend gaining popularity at the time. This approach had already been seen in the 1968 Reliant Scimitar GTE designed by Ogle Design. To explore this concept, Volvo collaborated with Carrozzeria Frua and Coggiola, tasking them with developing proposals for the new Volvo P1800 Rocket. In 1968, both companies presented their prototypes based on the existing P1800 body taken from the production line. Carrozzeria Frua, which had built the first P1800 coupe prototypes in the late 1950s, introduced a design named the Rocket. This design was notable for its rounded, truncated rear, giving it a distinctive and futuristic look. Meanwhile, Coggiola, a relatively new company established in 1966, showcased their design named the Beach Car. Among the two prototypes, Coggiola’s design showed the most promise. It eventually paved the way for the production model of the P1800 ES, which was introduced in 1971. The production P1800 ES, attributed to Volvo designer Jan Wilsgaard, retained many elements of Coggiola’s Beach Car design, including the shooting brake configuration with an elongated roofline. The Volvo P1800 Rocket prototype, a testament to the collaborative efforts between Volvo and renowned Italian coachbuilders, now resides in the Volvo museum collection. It stands as a symbol of the innovative spirit and creative partnerships that influenced the evolution of the iconic P1800 series. This prototype captures the essence of automotive design and engineering from that era, highlighting the imaginative solutions and forward-thinking approaches that characterized Volvo’s approach to car design.
