Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Boano
The Ferrari 250 GT Boano Coupé.
Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 250 GT Boano, a significant model in Ferrari’s illustrious history, was first introduced as a prototype by Pininfarina at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show. Pininfarina initially produced the first eight cars, but due to high demand and the need for expansion, production responsibilities were transferred to Carrozzeria Boano. When Fiat later hired Mario Boano, he passed the production duties to his son-in-law, Ezio Ellena. Together with his partner Luciano Pollo, Carrozzeria Ellena continued the production of the 250 GT for several more years. Under Ellena’s direction, the car underwent several revisions, including a raised roof and the removal of vent windows from the doors. These modified versions became known as the 250 GT Ellena. Carrozzeria Boano built a total of 74 units of the 250 GT on the long-wheelbase chassis, while Carrozzeria Ellena produced an additional 50 Coupés. Nearly all of these were coupés, with a single exception—a convertible with chassis number 0461 GT. This unique convertible was sold to New York collector Bob Lee directly off the stand at the 1956 New York Auto Show. At Enzo Ferrari’s directive, Lee purchased the Ferrari 250 GT Boano for $9,500, a price significantly below its production cost. Remarkably, Lee still owns this car, making it one of the oldest Ferraris still in the possession of its original purchaser. The Ferrari 250 GT Boano and Ellena Coupés are celebrated for their elegant design and significant contribution to the Ferrari legacy. These models exemplify the seamless blend of performance and style that Ferrari is renowned for, with each car representing a piece of automotive history.
