The Daewoo Espero designed by Bertone: a new hope.
The Daewoo Espero emerged from a collaborative effort between Daewoo and the esteemed Italian design firm Bertone, marking a significant milestone in the Korean manufacturer’s automotive journey. In 1986, Daewoo sought Bertone’s expertise to design a mid-size sedan that would not only break away from convention but also define a new industrial direction for the company. Bertone presented Daewoo’s top management with several sketches, among which was an intriguing design reminiscent of the discarded Citroën Xantia. This particular sketch resonated strongly with Daewoo’s vision, prompting them to acquire the rights to it from the French manufacturer. With the foundation laid, Bertone embarked on modernizing the design while Daewoo’s research and development center in Korea undertook the engineering process. Over the course of four years, the Espero took shape, retaining the original three-box silhouette characterized by almost flat surfaces and exceptional aerodynamics, boasting an impressive drag coefficient of 0.29. By the spring of 1990, the Espero was primed for production, embodying a blend of Italian design finesse and Korean engineering prowess. The name chosen for this new creation was Espero, derived from the Spanish word for “hope.” It symbolized Daewoo’s aspirations and optimism for the future as they ventured into the competitive mid-size sedan market. In August 1990, the Daewoo Espero made its debut on the Korean market, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the company. Simultaneously, production kicked off at the Bupyeong plant, signaling Daewoo’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles to consumers. The Espero represented not only a significant achievement in automotive design and engineering but also a testament to Daewoo’s determination to establish itself as a formidable player in the global automotive industry. With its distinctive design, advanced aerodynamics, and innovative features, the Daewoo Espero captured the essence of hope and possibility, paving the way for future successes and solidifying its place in automotive history.
