The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

The Citroen Xantia: the medium sized sedan.
The Citroen Xantia. A medium four door – balanced, spacious, sober and refined in its detail. The experience gained from a long working relationship as enabled the pairing of Citroen mechanics and Bertone Style to make this car, still today, one of the most requested in Europe. An association that continues, recently renewed with the new Berlingo production vehicle and Coupè de Plage concept car. In 1992, Citroën closed the Bx cycle and substituted it with the Xantia, for which the stylistic inspiration of Berone moved away from the two volume architectural characteristics of the French company’s saloons to assume the imposition of three, with the rear very short. The wedge shape of the Xm was corrected and designed with tast harmonising with a number of distinctly Citroën motifs such as the low, wide front end occupied by long and subtle optical groups that were perfectly integrated with the suggestion of a radiator grill. A roomy car (2752 mm wheelbase, 4445 mm long, 1775 mm wide and 1380 mm high), the xantia had an ample cockpit and a roof group of just two lateral light, another new development that went beyond the tradition of the French manufacturer. Offered with a range of nine different engines, from the 1580 cc petrol unit (80 hp at 6000 rpm) to the 2088 cc turbo-diesel (109 hp at 4300 rpm) the Xantia effectively coevered the medium-high sector of the car market until 2001.
