The theme of the 1992 Turin International Motor Show was “Man and the environment”, and Bertone, who had been urged by many to come up with an electric vehicle, captured the attention of experts and critics with the Blitz.

Vehicle Overview

The Bertone Blitz was a visionary show car that not only explored electric traction but also pushed boundaries in materials technology for chassis and bodywork. Designed by Luciano d’Ambrosio, Bertone‘s style director, the Blitz aimed for optimal lightness and performance. The body of the Blitz was a marvel of engineering, constructed by Albatech using 25CD4 steel tubing fixed with fiberglass panels and epoxy resin, with a core of Roacell. This composite material—epoxy glass and autoclave-produced nomex—ensured both strength and weight efficiency. Inside, the car featured carbon interiors, emphasizing its commitment to modern materials and technologies. Stylistically, the Blitz evoked the spirit of classic open two-seaters with a sporty edge, infused with a retro touch. Notably, the seating arrangement was asymmetrical, with the driver’s seat positioned slightly ahead of the passenger’s, adding to its dynamic appeal. One of the Blitz’s standout features was its front-hinged doors that opened vertically. This innovative concept, borrowed from the iconic Alfa Romeo Carabo designed by Bertone in 1968, added to the car’s futuristic aesthetic and functionality. This door design had since become a signature element in Bertone’s subsequent models, highlighting their ongoing commitment to innovation and distinctive design language. Overall, the Bertone Blitz represented a bold exploration of electric propulsion and advanced materials in automotive design. Its combination of lightweight construction, futuristic styling, and innovative door concept underscored Bertone’s role as a pioneer in shaping the future of automotive aesthetics and technology.
