The BMW 6 Series Cabriolet Italdesign is a fascinating “what-could-have-been” from the early 1980s, showcasing Italdesign’s creative interpretation of BMW’s iconic E24. In 1983, as BMW prepared to update the E24 range with a facelift, the idea of introducing a convertible variant gained traction. However, with BMW’s in-house design team stretched to capacity, the task was entrusted to the legendary Italdesign, under the guidance of Giorgetto Giugiaro. The prototype, presented to BMW executives in 1982, combined classic BMW proportions with innovative Italdesign flair. Despite being a design study, the cabriolet exhibited a remarkably polished aesthetic. Its clean lines and elegant roofline maintained the distinctive spirit of the E24 while offering a fresh, open-air dimension to the luxury coupe. Even though the soft top on the prototype was only a mock-up, its shape when closed was surprisingly harmonious and seamless, blending beautifully into the overall profile. One standout feature of Italdesign’s cabriolet design was its integrated bumpers. These were executed with remarkable finesse, achieving a perfect visual and functional harmony with the car’s bodywork—a bold departure from the more traditional bumper designs of the era. Their streamlined integration contributed to the cabriolet’s sleek and modern appearance, reinforcing its timeless appeal. Ultimately, despite its elegance and potential to expand the 6 Series lineup, the project did not move forward. BMW opted to focus on other developments, leaving this Italdesign cabriolet as a rare glimpse of an alternative direction for the E24. Though it never reached production, the BMW 6 Series Cabriolet Italdesign remains a captivating study of design ingenuity and collaboration. Its graceful lines and forward-thinking details continue to resonate with enthusiasts and historians, a testament to the creativity and ambition of both Italdesign and BMW during a golden era of automotive design.
